finally, a place where risk-taking is the goal!

Art-making is a live experience of self-exploration, risk-taking, and tolerating uncertainty. This group supervision series is designed to further clinical competency through the compassionate witnessing of your own process when you feel unclear, to help you see and release judgement, and to connect to an authentic, energetic self who is in touch with the unknown. It is a space to process the emotional challenges of being a mental health provider and an opportunity to be in community with your peers.

What does one-canvas mean?

Based on the concepts of process painting (developed by Cassou & Cubley) and the concept of “el duende” as described by Federico García Lorca (https://www.poetryintranslation.com/PITBR/Spanish/LorcaDuende.php), one canvas painting is a format designed by art therapist Abbe Miller in which the same canvas is worked on over several sessions. It is a flexible and spontaneous process of layering, editing, responding, and changing. There are no prompts and no “right” or “wrong”; just you and the canvas, your internal world and the relationship you create with your marks on the canvas that provide a mirror and direction.

group Structure

Max 6 participants

Supplies: You will need to purchase a 14”x18” stretched canvas or canvas board. I recommend using acrylic paint, having at least 6-8 colors and 4-5 different size brushes available. Optional: mixed paper and glue for collaging.

The format of each session will be an initial moment of quiet / mindfulness, followed by 60 minutes of your own creating, wrapping up with 45-60 minutes of group discussion and reflection.
